Happy New Year gardeners – water is now on tap!

SA Water provided a much appreciated New Year’s gift to our community garden by arriving on the morning of New Year’s Eve (a week earlier than expected) to dig trenches and connect fittings so that we now have direct access to mains water.

For all our dedicated gardeners who have been laboriously carting water by buckets and watering cans from the tank, there is now a garden tap, and attached to that is a hose long enough to reach all garden plots – just in time for the hottest part of summer!

The next step is to put more taps around the perimeter of the garden. SA Water generously left some fittings to help complete this task.

In the interim, happy gardening and happy watering to all our growers and their helpers.

Water is gold

The garden has received a golden gift of water from local company, Australian Civil and Mining Training, who operate from Todd Street (just down the road). This generous offering will help our gardeners and their plots through the next couple of weeks over Christmas. We expect piped water to be connected in early January when SA Water come back from their holiday break.

Thank you John Crabb for your special Christmas gift to our garden.

Breakfast in the garden

Well, what an incredible journey we’ve travelled this year, and what accomplishments we’ve achieved in the establishment and development of the Port Adelaide Community Garden.

To celebrate and acknowledge the festive season, the committee organised a Christmas ‘breakfast in the garden’, and what a great occasion it was! For all those who came, the committee says ‘thank you for making this event such a success’.

Chairman Ian would also like to thank committee members – Micheal and Lyn Thompson, Lina and Craig Russell and Jill Defoe, for their good will and help with organising this event. A special thank you also to our members Steve and Julie for their contribution of champagne (a few bubbles is always appreciated), to Mike’s feathered friends who supplied the eggs (… go girls)  and to Jordans Cereals for their donation of crunchy, wholegrain Crispy Oat Clusters.  This generosity of spirit is what makes our garden so special and our lives so enriched. Thank you also to Bev for running the garden’s web site.

Merry Christmas to you all, and best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2015 in our garden.

Members Market now in operation

The garden beds are in production and some members have excess produce, so the committee has set up an on-site Members Market for sharing and giving.

There is a ‘Community Plots’ box for produce grown in the communal garden plots. You can take any of these items as a ‘gift’ from the garden, but please be fair so others can receive as well. There will be a donation box provided and if you would like to contribute a small amount for items taken. This is not obligatory.

And there is a ‘Swap Box’. This is where you can swap any excess produce from your own garden plot for something someone else has left. If you don’t have something to swap on the day, you can balance it out later.

Both boxes work on an honour system and we hope you all have the pleasure of giving and receiving.

And on that theme, the garden is starting to get into the Christmas spirit with a few festive decorations starting to appear. Don’t forget the Christmas breakfast is on Sunday 14th 10 – 12.00.

Mike and Ian contributed to the making of the Members Market. Here they are proudly showing some of the first produce contributions.

New garden beds available soon

The interest in membership to the Port Adelaide Community Garden has been growing and this has put pressure on our committee to undertake more fundraising events to enable the purchase of materials required to build more garden plots. A sausage sizzle run by our dedicated committee members during the Port Adelaide Christmas Parade provided some hard-earned funds, and new plots are now under construction and will soon be ready for our latest members to use and enjoy.

Successful day at the Big Garage Sale

Thanks to all the fabulous donations from our members, and the hard work done by our committee and volunteers, the Big Garage Sale Day was able to attract a steady stream of treasure-hunters, and make a good profit. The sausage sizzle was also a winner and added to the booty in the kitty at the end of the day.

Congratulations to all involved.

Support your community garden garage sale

Our garden is grateful for the items that have been donated for the Garage Sale Trail day on Saturday October 25, but we need more!

If you or your friends, family, neighbours and pets have anything you would like to donate for this event, these items can be dropped off at the garden (adjacent to the Todd Street round-about, Port Adelaide) between 9.00 am – 1.00 pm on Saturday 18th. Yes, that’s this coming Saturday!

With your support we will be able to provide a fun and fabulous event on the Garage Sale Trail day, and hopefully make lots of money for the garden.

We would also love you to come to our garage sale on the 25th. It will be open from 8.00 am and there will be a sausage sizzle, coffee and soft drinks available for sale to the public, and free for any members who come and help out.
